Implant Dentistry

Simgle Dental ImplantWhen it comes to replacing missing teeth and enhancing the appearance of one’s smile, there are cases in which traditional dental bridges and dentures are not possible. Yet, given the revolutionary advancements in restorative dentistry, individuals with healthy gum tissues and adequate bone in their jaw can benefit from the improved appearance, durability and convenience found in dental implants.

As reported by Colgate, dental implants fuse to one’s jawbone, providing stable support for artificial teeth. What’s more is that dentures or bridges can be mounted to dental implants, meaning that they will not shift or slip. Thus, implants allow for individuals to wear dentures or bridges comfortably, and with greater support and function.

Currently, the American Dental Association considers two types of dental implants to be safe—Endosteal Implants and Subperiosteal Implants. Endosteal implants are placed into an individual’s jawbone surgically. After sufficient healing has taken place, a second surgery is performed to connect the implant post to the implant. The artificial tooth is then attached to the post. Yet, in cases where multiple teeth are being replaced, or when a bridge or denture is attached to dental implants, teeth are placed in a group onto the bridge or denture. Subperiosteal implants utilize a metal frame that is placed below the gum tissue, and is fitted onto the jawbone. Ultimately, the frame becomes fixed to the jawbone as gums heal. Implant posts that are attached to the frame will be visible through the tops of the gum line, and artificial teeth are simply mounted to each post.
