Dentures: They Are Different Than You Think

Lawrenceville GA Restorative DentistryWithout question, there are countless misconceptions when it comes to dentures, leading many people to believe that they are painful and bulky. Yet, dental professionals believe that many of the myths surrounding dentures come from a lack of understanding about what they really are. The bottom line is—dentures are probably different than you think.

To begin, there are three types of dentures—complete (permanent), partial (permanent) and immediate (temporary). Each type is uniquely designed to bond or attach to teeth or other dental restorations, such as a crown or dental implant. Consider each type of denture below:

  • Complete or Full (Permanent) Denture—when individuals have lost their teeth on one or both sides, a complete denture is a removable solution for missing teeth. However, it may be classified as “conventional” or “immediate,” according to WebMD. The primary difference concerns when the denture can be placed in the mouth. With this type of denture, a longer adjustment period may be necessary, as the muscles, bone and tongue adapt to its placement.
  • Partial Denture—when individuals have some teeth remaining in the upper or lower jaw, a partial denture is a viable solution for replacing their missing teeth. Often called a bridge, a partial denture is generally a permanent restoration that is attached to a base or metal framework that secures the denture. Yet, a customized partial denture can be removable as well.
  • Immediate Denture—when an individual prepares for a denture placement, they might have teeth removed first. When this happens, a denture can be placed “immediately” following a tooth extraction until a permanent solution is ready. It’s important to understand that an immediate denture may require adjustments, as its fit will change as gum tissues heal.

Perhaps the greatest advancement concerning dentures is the quality of materials that are used to design them. From acrylic to metal to Valplast, special properties not only make dentures affordable for everyone, they ensure a custom fit and natural appearance. It’s no wonder that dentures are becoming a popular, modern-day remedy for patients of all ages.

What are your thoughts about dentures? While there are many opinions regarding this age-old dental restoration, there are many new reasons to be excited about the future of dentures.
